We recently met up with our good friend (and one of our favorite Chinese artists) Yan Wei in Beijing – she was gracious enough to invite us into her home studio to film and interview her for a short time-lapse video (shared below). For those who don’t know, Yan Wei is an intensely private and reserved, so this is real treat. Thanks Wei!

In the video, Yan Wei shows us the creation process of one of her new characters and discusses an ever-changing Beijing, influences in her work, what others think of her style, a messy sketchbook, and her philosophy on venting.

The video’s soundtrack is a song titled Mushroom Pillow by Neocha.com-user Nara.

If you’d like to view the video on Vimeo, link here for English subtitles, and here for no English subtitles. The video is also available on Tudou without English subtitles, link here; or of course also on the Chinese version of NeochaEDGE, link here.

A special thanks to Blake Stone-Banks for audio support during production.

Be sure to peek the details in the hi-res scan (shared below) of the character Yan Wei creates for this video – it’s just superb. We had such a fun time watching her create it.
