I’m sure you all remember us writing about on Super Baozi not too long ago – you know, that bad-ass Chinese steamed bun who, with his mastery of nun-chucks and kung fu, beat the pants off the Japanese Sushi Roll? If you need a refresher, link here.
Well, to our delight, he’s back, and wishing us happy Chinese New Year in a new animated short titled “Super Baozi’s Tiger Year Greetings.” (see below)
Sun Haipeng (孙海鹏), the mastermind indie animator / CG artist behind the Super Baozi character and series, created this latest piece with a team – he now has a team! Bravo Haipeng!
It took him and the team more than two months to complete the animation, and, as expected, it has been met with wide acclaim on the Chinese Internet. The piece itself is packed with traditional Chinese culture element and references like Chinese knots, gold ingots, paper-cuts, the upside down “fu” character, and big red lanterns. Oh, and of course, the brilliantly animated “kuai ban” – the rattling of the hand-held bamboo boards to produce an accompanying beat while he telling a story. The ancient Chinese version of western beat-boxing and rapping. So well done!
For Chinese-speaking readers, listen closely to the very last line of Super Baozi’s New Year rap. Hysterical.
Haipeng and his team also recently launched an official website for Super Baozi and are also looking to start a comic strip. These guys are serious about making Baoqiang a Chinese classic. We applaud their ambition and passion and look forward to their success. If you’d like to join Haipeng’s team, link here for details.

This is such a fun animation. I saw it on CCTV a couple nights ago…they edited out Super Baozi’s last sentence…oh well.
