“MONSTER OF THE YEAR” & “FIXING THE SKY,” a collaboration from ningbo-based EDGE Creative Collective illustrator SHADOW CHEN & singapore-based WILLIAM CHUA
See below for two gorgeous image / t-shirt designs co-created by Ningbo-based EDGE Creative Collective illustrator Shadow Chen and Singapore-based William Chua.
The first design (titled: Monster of the Year) is based on a character in Chinese mythology named “Nian” (年, meaning “year” in English). Nian is an angry, ugly, ferocious monster that lived in the ancient times. He is some sort of cross between a dragon and a unicorn, and is believed to come down from the sky every year and hunt people around the time of Chinese New Year / Spring Festival. In the design below, Nian is depicted coming down from the sky in the form of a shooting star.
The second design (titled: “Fixing the Sky”) is also based on a character from Chinese mythology – Nv Wa (女娲), the Goddess of Creation. Nv Wa is known for restoring order in the universe and saving the world from destruction by fixing a hole in the sky with magic stones.
The neo-traditional themes and visual styles in these are so great…we love them both! Bravo Shadow and William!
