stunning image-making from emerging chongqing-based fashion photographer “nanguazi”
Nanguazi (南瓜子 / 苏楠) is an insanely talented creative originally from Guilin soon to be graduating from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts (majoring in animation). She works in a variety of mediums (e.g. illustration, painting, photography, etc.) as she believes a true visual artist needs the skills to be able to communicate in as many modes as possible.
Oh, and if that’s not enough, she is also lead singer in well-known indie rock band Clown Baron (小丑与男爵).
Although Nanguazi has been very successful as an illustrator – her work has been featured in various magazines and she has published several comic books – her new passion is fashion photography. Nanguazi loves how it has taught her the importance of efficient team work in addressing a concept. Furthermore, she enjoys the freedom of combining different elements during shoots (e.g. projections) or mediums during post-production and digital retouching. This often results in her photographs evolving into complex designs, similar in style to her initial illustration work.
Nanguazi has been taking photos as a hobby for quite a while, but all the positive feedback she has received has further fueled her passion – she is now determined to move to Beijing and pursue a full-on career in fashion photography. We are convinced that she has what it takes and hope to see more from her soon: see below for a sampling of her work, it’s stunning!

Nanguazi likes to create characters that resemble herself, and sometimes also models for her own photographs: can you spot her in any of the shots below? How does Nanguazi’s work compare to Shxpir’s? How do readers feel about post production / digital retouching in fashion photography?

原来是她! 我从04年看到她作品得时候就开始喜欢了,现在风格没那么阴暗了,还是很喜欢!
i like her style a lot. but i think we are also really diffrent.hehe.
Well, one thing you and Nanguazi definetely do have in common is the fact that you are both extremely versatile: You are a dancer, coreographer, photographer, designer, while she is an illustrator, singer, photographer etc. That’s amazing!
