  • tracks | a few of our favorites from now defunct beijing-based indie punk band “HANG ON THE BOX”

Beijing-based indie punk-rock band “Hang on the Box” (aka: HOTB) formed in 1998 when it members were a mere 15 years old. Having last played together in 2008 for a 10th anniversary gig, the band has broken up, but not before releasing 5 albums and establishing themselves as one of the major players in the young history of Chinese indie rock. The band’s members continue to make music, namely lead singer Wang Yue (aka: Gia) who has a solo project with Modern Sky Records and guitarist Yangfen, who plays in the Beijing band “Ourself Beside Me.”

[Pppppsssssst, rumor has it the band is getting back together very soon...stay tuned for more on that.]

Below are some of our favorite HOTB tracks, from their “best of” album, “Hang on the Box 1998 – 2008.”

no rumor, HOTB played a show last weekend but the singer is the only original member: http://pangbianr.com/hot-cat-28-august-2010

    2. Beijing Daze says:

Josh is correct… HTOB is reformed with Gia as the only original member and performed on 8/28/2010 in Beijing.
by the way, ex-HOTB member Yang Fan is also making music as the mastermind behind Ourself Besides Me… they play cool 70s inspired jam rock

Thanks for the info. I realized that Gia was still performing, and performing HOTB songs at that, but wasn’t aware she was playing under the HOTB name.
