Shanghai-based experimental math-rock / psychedelic indie band Duck Fight Goose has long been one of the most interesting musical acts in town (and one of our favorites), however, for a while now, they’ve left fans disappointed by the fact that they never properly recorded anything.
Well, today that all changes!
Shared below – exclusively on NeochaEDGE – is a first listen to the band’s debut EP “Flow.” Oh my, how we love this! It’s perhaps the best thing to come out of the Chinese music scene since, uh, ever? You make the call – let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
And you want to know what? The EP was recorded / produced for, get this, a whopping RMB 150 / USD 22 (pretty fucking indie, huh?) by band manager, good music adherer and all around amazing guy Brad Ferguson.
If you dig the band’s sound, be sure to check them out December 18th in Shanghai at Yuyintang (full details below). They’ll be giving away free copies of the EP (plus a sticker!) at the door.
Bravo to band members Duck, Goose, Panda, and Dragon – this effort is superb and goes not unnoticed. Also, a special shout-out goes to the wonderfully talented Matthew Niederhauser for the band photo, one of many from his ongoing portrait series capturing the Chinese indie music scene band by band. Buy his book!

Duck Fight Goose – Flow (EP) ///
[P.S. San San, not sure if you know, but Adam has always had a crush on you.]

Wow…this is really impressive. The first track kills it. When can we expect a full album? Thanks for sharing.

Future Deer is my favourite track, but the whole EP kills. This is an aural testament to local creativity and originality. It fully skewers all ridiculous stereotypes of ‘Asia’ being in some way beyond derivative.
[...] In conversations with visiting Shanghai music people the first “band to check out” to pop off the tongue is usually Duck Fight Goose. I saw them play in Beijing in 2009, about a year and half before they released their Flow EP. I’ve heard countless rave reviews of Flow from aforementioned pundits, and it really is an exceptional record: a playfully postmodern exploration of rock and late-20th-century avant electronics that doesn’t fall totally into either the “postrock” or “synth noise” camp but feels at home in both (it can be streamed for free on DFG’s douban and NeochaEDGE).
