NeochaEDGE was recently featured in M-Zone, a nationally published China Mobile-sponsored magazine about fashion, design / art, urban life, and technology.

The street-art photo used in the piece is of Shanghai-based graffiti artists Dezio and Popil doing a live art performance at Search for Creative City, the Chinese creative culture event series that NeochaEDGE collaborated on with Shui On Group’s Knowledge & Innovation Community (KIC).

shanghai’s popil collaborates w/ coach for charity auction

Our good friend Popil recently collaborated with Coach to paint 20 some tote bags for an all-day branded charity auction. Included in her fan-base now is celebrity Hong Kong pop singer Gigi, who is (as a result of the auction) toting around one of Popil’s Coach creations.

Of the event, Popil said, “I hope whoever gets my tote bags will cherish them. Let’s do more for charities.”

Yep, sounds about right, we agree!

popil paints up japanese fashion designer mayumi sato’s shop

Japanese fashion designer Mayumi Sato commissioned Shanghai-based creative extraordinaire Popil to paint the pull-down gate on her Anfu Rd. shopfront. The piece features Popil’s classic “young girl” a staple element in pretty much every graffiti piece Popil does, accompanied by either a cat or rabbit.

If you like India, animals, or nature, and you are in Guangzhou between April 30 to May 30th, then be sure check out Popil and Madi Ju’s (both Guangzhou natives) INDIA ZOO Indian Art & Photography exhibition held at Goelia Concept 225. The exhibition is a mesmerizing collection of Popil and Madi Ju’s photography, paintings, illustrations, journals entries, notes, and scribbles from a recent trip they took to India.

For those that don’t know, Goelia Concept 225 is a well-known wonderland for Guangzhou art fans, located on Beijing Rd. No.225.

We’re sure this is going to be an fun exhibition, don’t miss it.

Popil recently put up a graffiti piece in memory of her cat Tang Tang at M50 (Moganshan Rd. in Shanghai). She was joined by her frequent partner in crime, Dezio, and a couple of new friends, including Rbily from France and Bibichun and Artthey from Malaysia. Enjoy!

We often feature work from Popil on NeochaEDGE, whether it be her illustrations, graffiti, product design, etc., however, we have yet to share any of her photography – this is a first! Despite being naturally talented behind a lens and having dozens of cameras strewn around her flat, she’s not necessarily know for her “shooter-ship.”

The below photo caught our eye. It’s a simple snap of her friend Fang Zhou on a cold day just before she sets off on a journey back home. Everything is perfect in this shot. Bravo Popil!

A few weekends ago we stood up to the cold and took a quick trip to Moganshan Rd. in Shanghai to see what new stuff the city’s graffiti writers had to offer. Pulling away in a taxi, we whipped out out an iPhone and did a drive-by filming of the main wall. Check out the clip below. The soundtrack to the clip is by Neocha.com user ELECOY. That day we also ran into Dezio and Popil painting this piece.

popil’s designs for nescafe’s co-creation campaign

Nescafe is currently running an online co-creation campaign that aims to turn local Chinese designers’ work into physical products. Designs can be made for cups, mobile phone lanyards, postcards, etc., and the best designs are not only manufactured as Nescafe gifts, but the chosen creatives are rewarded for the copyright of their work. We think this is a great way for brands to interact and source inspiring new ideas and visuals from China’s grassroots creative community.

On a bitterly cold Sunday in Shanghai, we took a trip to the Moganshan Rd. area in Shanghai to check out some of the new graffiti pieces. Not surprisingly, we ran into our friends Popil and Dezio, who were working together with a.gor on a new collaborative piece. Below are some snaps of the finished piece (top) as well as the individual sections done by the three writers.

popil’s creates a “mr. pigeon” notebook for esquire

Our good friend Popil recently produced a very cool illustration for a notebook included with the 2009 December edition of Esquire magazine. Popil’s “Mr. Pigeon” dawns the cover of the notebook marching forward while sporting a stylish suit, a blue fedora, a trendy handbag, and dapper square-toe loafers – fashionable, confident, and gentlemanly, a perfect fit for Esquire’s brand values.

Another great collaboration between a commercial entity and China’s creative community. Bravo!

FanFanCan X Neocha photography from “search for creative city”

Last month, together with the Knowledge & Innovation Community (KIC), NeochaEDGE organized 4 weekends of Chinese creativity and fun as part of the Search for Creative City (寻城记) event series. We gathered 16 of Shanghai’s most interesting creative groups to exhibit, perform, host games, sell products, and just have a great time with everyone who attended.

We’d like to thank all of the creative groups, street artists, musicians / bands, security guards, and taxi cab drivers that participated – thank you!

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been posting time-lapse videos of the live art performances from Search for Creative City (寻城记), an event NeochaEDGE collaborated on with the Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC). videos from plastered t-shirts’ “rock weekend” in beijing

Early last month we posted on Plastered T-shirts’ “Rock Weekend” event at Yugong Yishan – the event has since come and gone and was a roaring success. Bravo to Dominic and his team.

A lesson for all those marketers / organizers out there doing events: events usually only last a day or two and then they are over and forgotten. However, if you digitally document them, they could in fact “live forever” online – make videos!

The first video below captures the weekend’s festivities in a short summary format. It’s a very cool overview of how things went down.

The second video is PK-14’s full live set at the event – one of our favorite Chinese indie rock bands and probably the most legit of them all.

The third video is Carsick Cars‘ full live set at the event – also one of our favorites and arguably the best live rock act in China these days. [My vote goes to Xie Tian Xiao who still blows my mind every time I see him perform.]

The fourth video is The Gar’s full live set at the event – The Gar is in fact my personal favorite Chinese indie band. They just have such a great sound.

The fifth and sixth videos below are of the up-and-coming Chinese bands Rustic and Mr. Graceless, who both also performed at “Rock Weekend” by virtue of being two of three (the other was Bird Striking) winners of a battle of the bands-style competition put on at D-22 in the run up to the event.

Have fun, these videos are great.

Oh, also, while watching, if you look closely at the stage backdrop you’ll be able to see one of Neocha.com-user Popil’s illustrations – she designed the “Rock Weekend” logo / poster for Plastered T-Shirts.

I recently attended the wedding of Damen (drummer for the indie bands Hard Queen & Booji) and Brad Ferguson. Shanghai creative extraordinaire Popil was the maid of honor. event | w+k jelly generation exhibition in portland, oregon

The Jelly Generation refers to young Chinese born in the 80s. The phrase / reference originates from the establishment of China’s first jelly production factory in 1985, which was big news at the time. 80s generation kids have playfully aligned their youth with the growth of China’s jelly industry.

The Jelly Generation is young, fresh, and with a sharp sense of irreverence and creativity. Having experienced rapid economic growth and massive social changes, the Jelly Generation, compared with their predecessors, process a keener sensibility about what is going on and they usually interpret the world they perceive in a slightly skewed but unique perspective – this perspective is usually flavored with a distinct personal aesthetic. In general, they are more aware of their talent and more open to express themselves.

For those of you who will be in Portland, Oregon in October, here is your chance to have a firsthand taste of China’s Jelly Generation. On October 9th, an exhibition being put on by W+K titled Jelly Generation will be unveiled at Goldsmith Gallery in Portland, Oregon’s Chinatown district (full details below). The exhibition is dedicated to China’s exuberant youth culture and emerging arts prowess. Over 30 emerging 80s and 90s generation Chinese artists, photographers, and designers have been invited to share their artwork, including our close friends Shanghai-based illustrators / designers Popil and Quail Egg, who created their pieces on top of vintage 1962 Portland newspapers sent to China especially for artists participating in the exhibition.
